March 3, 2013 - 3rd Sunday of Lent with Communion

Greetings,

Sunday Worship
The Gospels, the stories of Jesus are often called the Good News.  However, from time to time we encounter stories that do not really seem to be entirely “good” news.  The Gospel reading from Luke this Sunday is one of those passages.  Jesus is reflecting on the reaction of the people around him to tragic deaths in the community.  The community seems to be under the impression that these bad things happened to bad people.  “They got what they deserved.” Jesus disputes that understanding, and suggests that the victims of the tragedies were no worse or better that anyone else, and that if everyone got what they deserved from God there would be very few if any left standing.  Is that “good news?  Jesus then goes on to tell a parable about a fig tree that hasn’t fruited in three years.  The owner of the tree wants it cut down, but the gardener asks that the tree be given another year.  The gardener says he will give the tree some extra care, but at the end of the year if that doesn’t work...

In the time for the Story for all ages, we will be asking “What’s wrong with ...?”

From the Scriptures we will hear from Letters to Churches: 1 Corinthians 10: 1-13,  and from the Gospels: Luke 13: 1-9.
The reflection is, “Owner, Gardener or Fig Tree”

Feb. 17, 2013 - First Sunday of Lent

Greetings,

Sunday Worship
Lent has begun.  When I was a young kid in the United Church we didn’t hear much about Lent.  It was something the Catholics did  (and maybe some Anglicans), but we didn’t do it.  However, by the time I got to university, the United Church and other churches of the Reformation had begun to look at some of the things that had been lost, in the attempt to rid the church of unnecessary excesses.  It became apparent to some, that while the proliferation of Saints Days and Special Days and different levels of Celebrations did not seem helpful in one’s journey of faith, a year that moved through various times and phases did seem to be a helpful tool.  The worship experience is not just about listening. Changes in colour and tone in the worship space serve to enhance and reinforce the focus of our worship, like signposts on a journey.  What are the signposts in Lent?

In the time for the Story for all ages, we will be sharing in the ancient tradition of the Imposition of Ashes.

From the Scriptures we will hear from the Law: Deuteronomy 26:1-11,  and from the Gospels: Luke 4: 1-13
The reflection is, “and lead us not into temptation”

Sunday School
This week we will be exploring Lent learning our new scripture Romans 10: 8b-13, "Declare with your mouth; believe with your heart".  We will also be working on our individual prayer books.

Feb 10, 2013 - Transfiguration Sunday

Greetings,

Sunday Worship
This Sunday is Transfiguration Sunday.  Transfiguration has to do with change.  Those of you who are Harry Potter fans will know of Transfiguration, turning birds into crystal goblets or rats into tea cups.  But, surprise, surprise, the transfiguration that  the Church looks at is different.  The gospel reading describes an event in the life of Jesus and the disciples which the Church has named the Transfiguration (the Church has had a hard time using small words.)  Jesus goes up a hill with a few of his followers and appears to change.  Jesus followers are terrified and somewhat stunned by the change and by the accompanying sound and light show.  Of course, being human, the disciples response to this amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience is to miss the point completely.  We will look at this event, and the changes that took place in everyone present, and then look at where we are in that story and in our own story....

For the Story for all ages, we will looking at good times and asking the question “Can we stay, can we, can we...?.”

From the Scriptures we will hear are from the Law: Exodus 34: 29-35,  and from the Gospels: Luke 9: 28-36
The reflection is, “It’s good to be here?”

Annual Budget Meeting
Immediately after the service we will have our Annual Budget Meeting to examine and to pass our congregation’s budget for 2013.  This is an important meeting and everyone is encouraged to attend.  To add to the encouragement, the meeting will be followed by a...

Prizes will be given to three young winners in the art contest.
