Feb 10, 2013 - Transfiguration Sunday

Greetings,

Sunday Worship
This Sunday is Transfiguration Sunday.  Transfiguration has to do with change.  Those of you who are Harry Potter fans will know of Transfiguration, turning birds into crystal goblets or rats into tea cups.  But, surprise, surprise, the transfiguration that  the Church looks at is different.  The gospel reading describes an event in the life of Jesus and the disciples which the Church has named the Transfiguration (the Church has had a hard time using small words.)  Jesus goes up a hill with a few of his followers and appears to change.  Jesus followers are terrified and somewhat stunned by the change and by the accompanying sound and light show.  Of course, being human, the disciples response to this amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience is to miss the point completely.  We will look at this event, and the changes that took place in everyone present, and then look at where we are in that story and in our own story....

For the Story for all ages, we will looking at good times and asking the question “Can we stay, can we, can we...?.”

From the Scriptures we will hear are from the Law: Exodus 34: 29-35,  and from the Gospels: Luke 9: 28-36
The reflection is, “It’s good to be here?”

Annual Budget Meeting
Immediately after the service we will have our Annual Budget Meeting to examine and to pass our congregation’s budget for 2013.  This is an important meeting and everyone is encouraged to attend.  To add to the encouragement, the meeting will be followed by a...

Pancake Lunch
In anticipation of the Shrove Tuesday and the start of Lent, the men of Spirit West will be providing a Pancake Lunch on Sunday following the Budget Meeting.

“Building Bridges Between Faith Traditions”

On Sunday February 10 the Edmonton Interfaith Centre will hold its third annual Multifaith Concert featuring music, dance and chants from different traditions around the world. Its volunteer awards, nicknamed IFFY’s by Mayor Mandel, will be given this year Sofia Yaqub and Rabbi David Kunin. The silent auction items are looking great, and refreshments will be served. Popular young entertainer Sean Sonego will be the Master of Ceremonies this year, as well as singing what has become our theme song for the event, Johnny Reid’s classic “We Can Change the World”. Prizes will be given to three young winners in the art contest.
