May 26, 2013 - Trinity Sunday

Worship
In the Church Calendar, this Sunday, the Sunday after Pentecost, is called Trinity Sunday.  This is the only “day” in the Church Calendar that does not remind us of an event in the life of Jesus,  (Christmas, Easter), the early church (Pentecost) or the saints (St. Valentine, St. Patrick, All Saints).  Trinity Sunday is named for a doctrine, a statement about how we understand God.  Most of us probably know or have heard the traditional statement of the Trinity called the Trinitarian Formula: God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  It seems relatively simple if a little confusing.  But much ink and not a little blood have been spilled defending or challenging that statement.  We will look at the Trinity, its expression and more.

The Biblical stories we are going to hear are Proverbs 8: 1-4, 22-31, Psalm 8, and John 16: 12-15.

In the Time for All Ages we will learn that “God is so big...!”

I have called the Sermon, “God beyond words.”

 Church Membership Classes
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, May 30 at 7:00.

The Spirit West Plant Sale
A BIG thank you to all who helped with the Plant Sale last weekend.  In particular I would like to thank Margery Wright and Bonnie Cannam who were determined that this would go ahead.  It was a great success.  The gross sales for the weekend were $10,000.  By next week, after we have paid for the plants, the advertising and miscellaneous expenses, I should be able to tell you what Spirit West gets to keep.

Messy Church: Pilot – June 1st
Messy Church is an innovative way to be the Church in a way that appeals to all ages, particularly young families.  It is an opportunity to experience the stories of faith in a different way and time from the typical Sunday morning.  It is an experience of community time involving story and music, a variety of “messy” hands-on crafts and activities, a celebration and dinner.  We will be piloting “Messy Church” on Saturday, June 1st at 4:00pm.  Please spread the word to others who might enjoy this experience.  On June 1st we will share the story of Noah in a number of ways.  If you want to know more about Messy Church, check our website www.spiritwest.org

Church Picnic
The Church Picnic is currently scheduled for June 9 after the worship service.  The picnic will be held outside, weather permitting.  More information will be available in the next few weeks.

Spirit West Community Garage Sale
The Spirit West Community Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, June 15th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Book tables in advance for $25.00 or donate items to the church table.  All proceeds to go to paying down the mortgage.

May 19, 2013 - Pentecost

Greetings.

Worship
This Sunday I am straying from the Lectionary and substituting readings that are intended to highlight Mother’s Day.  The first reading is from Proverbs, it has been called the “Ode to a Capable Wife.”  It is a interesting portrayal of the role of a woman in society, one that seems difficult to emulate.  It is certainly not one dimensional.  The reading from the Gospel of Matthew is also a bit surprising.  While Jesus is speaking he is given a message that his mother and brothers are outside waiting for him.  (Today he would have received a text message).  Given the place of honour Mary has throughout much of the Christian Church, Jesus’ response to the messenger seems almost rude.   The clue to my choice of these two passages lies in the last verse of each.

The Biblical stories we are going to hear are Proverbs 31: 10-30, and Matthew 12: 46-50.

The Sermon title is a quote from the Gospel reading: “Who is my Mother?”

May 5, 2013 - 6th Sunday of Easter with Communion

Greetings.

I’m back!  And right off, I want to thank Anne Dingwell for leading worship last Sunday.  Having talented people like Anne provides a special richness to our being Spirit West.

Worship
This Sunday we continue to look at the experiences of the early disciples as they come to understand what it means to be a follower of what they might have called “the Way.”  We will look at two readings.  One focuses on the experiences of Paul.  Paul has a vision and immediately decides to change course.  The other reading reminds of us of a promise made by Jesus that we would have the Holy Spirit to teach us and help us.  How do we decide the course that God is calling us on?  How do we understand revelation?  How does the Spirit teach and guide us?  This is also a Communion Sunday.

The Biblical stories we are going to hear are Acts 16: 9-15, and John 14: 23-29.

The Story for all Ages is “Let’s go to Macedonia.”

The Sermon title is “GPS – God’s Positioning System”

Church Photo Directory  (May 15 is now available for photos, read on..)

After a bit of a slow start, the Spirit West Photo Directory is happening.  Almost all of the photo sessions this weekend are booked.  But if for some reason you could not make it tomorrow or Saturday, there will be another opportunity to have your photo taken.  Norma and Cathy Sutherland are now taking bookings for Wednesday, May 15.  Appointments are available every 15 minutes between 2:30 and 8:30. Call the church office.
