May 19, 2013 - Pentecost

Greetings.

Worship
This Sunday I am straying from the Lectionary and substituting readings that are intended to highlight Mother’s Day.  The first reading is from Proverbs, it has been called the “Ode to a Capable Wife.”  It is a interesting portrayal of the role of a woman in society, one that seems difficult to emulate.  It is certainly not one dimensional.  The reading from the Gospel of Matthew is also a bit surprising.  While Jesus is speaking he is given a message that his mother and brothers are outside waiting for him.  (Today he would have received a text message).  Given the place of honour Mary has throughout much of the Christian Church, Jesus’ response to the messenger seems almost rude.   The clue to my choice of these two passages lies in the last verse of each.

The Biblical stories we are going to hear are Proverbs 31: 10-30, and Matthew 12: 46-50.

The Sermon title is a quote from the Gospel reading: “Who is my Mother?”

Riverbend Youth Cantata

Come out to share and support the Riverbend youth in this incredible achievement- once again an original script and score!

The show is called Let The Ocean Guide, and it is a Climate Change Narrative (in the future) inspired by Noah's Ark and the earliest stories of Genesis.

Dance, silhouette work, solo and ensemble singing, and RAP! ;-) Along with the acting!!!

Let the Ocean Guide,  Saturday, May 11 at 7:30pm or Sunday, May 12 at 9:00 or 10:30am

The Spirit West Plant Sale

It’s a go!  Now that spring appears to have arrived it’s time to think about your gardens.  Come to the Church on Friday, May 17 from 1:00pm to 8:00pm, or on Saturday, May 18 from 9:00am to 8:00pm for bedding plants, hanging baskets, decorative planters, hanging strawberries, tomatoes (all sizes) and bags of compost.  On Saturday there will be a barbeque to provide nourishment while you select your plants.

Messy Church: Pilot – June 1st

Messy Church is an innovative way to be the Church in a way that appeals to all ages, particularly young families.  It is an opportunity to experience the stories of faith in a different way and time from the typical Sunday morning.  It is an experience of community time involving story and music, a variety of “messy” hands-on crafts and activities, a celebration and dinner.  We will be piloting “Messy Church” on Saturday, June 1st at 4:00pm.  Please spread the word to others who might enjoy this experience.  On June 1st we will share the story of Noah in a number of ways.  If you want to know more about Messy Church, check our website www.spiritwest.org
