December 22, 2013 - Advent 4 - Love

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

As I sat down to write this, I realized that this will be the last “weekly” email for 2013, and my last for a few weeks.  Next Thursday is Boxing Day, and I am not going to be in the office.  The Thursday after that is January 2, 2014, and I am not going to be in the office then either, both these days are part of my Christmas holidays.  The Thursday after that is January 9, which is the day after my scheduled surgery (gall bladder), I will not be in the office, but an email may come out that week.  So I think the next email I will be sending will be coming out on Jan 16.

That being said, I have managed to keep the email relatively short!

Worship
Sunday, Dec 22, - The Fourth (and last) Sunday of Advent.  This is the Sunday of Love and of Light, and is also this year, the day after the longest night of the year.  The time at the Manger will look at the Gift of Blessing.  The Scripture Readings are Isaiah 7: 10-16 and Matthew 1: 18-25.  The Sermon title is “Light in the Darkness.”

Christmas Eve, Dec 24 – The Service is at 6:30pm.  It will be the Christmas story in Scripture and music.  We are hoping to have an impromptu pageant as part of the Service.  If there are children (or teens) who would like to participate, come a little bit early.  We will assign roles and arrange costumes on the spot, but the actors do not need to learn or say in lines.

Cinnamon Bun Sunday, Dec 29 –  Usual time of 10:30 am, come and enjoy a more relaxed Service.  As we gather to sing songs and hear some stories, we share some nice hot cinnamon buns.  The Service is held in the Lower Hall.  The theme of this year’s Cinnamon Bun Sunday is “Songs we sing at Christmas.”  I will be telling stories about three songs we sing at Christmas that are just a bit strange.  One is about a bad date, one is based on very strange history and one proclaims some impossible geography.

Epiphany Sunday, January 5, 2014 – Epiphany in Western Christianity, of which we are a part, is about the arrival of the Wise Men, Magi, or Three Kings in Bethlehem.  There is an ancient legend that when each of the three approached the Manger, each saw someone different lying there.  Who do you see in the manger?  This Sunday will also include the celebration of Communion.

Christmas Hampers
Hamper shopping will be done on Saturday, Dec 21.  Please meet at the Church at 6:00 pm for pizza before we head out to Walmart to shop.  If you have bought children’s gifts to go with the hampers the gifts must be brought to the church on Sunday, Dec. 22.  For more information call the church office.  If you are sponsoring a hamper, please send in your money as soon as possible.  If you want to put it in the offering on Sunday, make sure that you indicate on the envelope or cheque that the money is for a hamper sponsorship.

Men’s Breakfast
This Saturday, Dec 21 is Men’s Breakfast.  All men associated with Spirit West are welcome to attend.  We meet at 8:00 am in the Lower Hall.  We usually throw in $10 each to cover the food and to build up the “Men’s Breakfast Maintenance Fund” which is used to fund small maintenance jobs around the church.

Spirit West Prayer Chain
As many of you know, Spirit West has a Prayer Chain, a group of people who have committed to continue our prayers of concern from Sunday through the week.  To be part of this ministry, email your request to spiritwest.prayerchain@gmail.com .  You may also email a request for prayer to the same email address.

December 15, 2013 - Advent 3 - Joy

Greetings!

Worship this Week

Historically on the third Sunday of Advent there has been a focus on Mary’s role in the Christmas story.  This is also the Sunday of Joy.  The readings point to both Mary and joy, but the vision of a world turned upside down that is celebrated is perhaps a bit challenging.  Some of you will have heard of the recent Apostolic Exhortation by Pope Francis.  It is the one that is causing so much concern among (mainly American) right wing capitalists, because the Pope questions some of the assumptions of free-market capitalism in terms of creating a better world.  The actual document is called Evangelii Gaudium, the Joy of the Gospel.  What is the joy of the Gospel?

The time for all ages will again be centred on a Manger, as we continue the  series called “Gifts of the Manger.”  This week’s gift is the gift of Life.  Remember that we are thinking of things that we might need to welcome a new baby.  If you wish to bring gifts for a new baby, feel free to bring them.  We will ensure that the gifts go to those in need.

The Scripture readings are Isaiah 35: 1-10 and Matthew 11: 2-11.  We will also be singing the Song of Mary from Luke 1: 47-55. This song is also known as the Magnificat, because the first line in Latin starts, Magnificat anima mea, “My soul magnifies...”

The Sermon title is “Joy and Gladness”

Night of the Father’s Love – Christmas Choir Canata

The Sunday night, Dec. 15 at 6:30 pm our Spirit West Choir will be presenting Night of the Father’s Love, the Christmas story in music for the whole family.  Come out and enjoy a lovely evening of music and fellowship. There is no charge for this event, but you may make a donation that will help pay down the Spirit West mortgage.

Christmas Hampers

Once again, under the leadership of Rebecca (Rivet) Goldsack, we will be preparing Christmas Hampers for those in need.  You can help with this project in a couple of ways.  You can financially sponsor a hamper for $150.  If this is beyond your means, you can split the cost with others.  You can also buy children’s gifts that will accompany the hampers.  Check the posters on the wall at the back of the church to sign up for sponsorship or to pick a child (by age and gender) to buy a gift for.  The hamper shopping will be done on Saturday, Dec 21.  Gifts need to be brought to the church on Sunday, Dec. 22.  For more information call the church office.

White Gift Sundays – Put a Gift Under the Tree

This Sunday is the last opportunity to put gifts under our Christmas Tree.  The gifts should not be wrapped.  The gifts collected will go to the Bissell Centre.  The wish list from Bissell incudes: Adult & children clothing, socks & undergarments, Adult & children winter outer wear, Books (reading & colouring), DVDs & VHS Videos, Games and toys for all ages, Stuffies, plush toys, or teddy bears, Household / family items, Christmas decorations, Wrapping paper, and Blankets

December 8, 2013 - Advent 2 - Peace

Greetings!

Worship this Week
This Sunday is the second Sunday of Advent, the Sunday of Peace.  The focus of this Sunday is twofold, there is the call of John the Baptist, and there is the call to live a life that is consistent with the Good News we proclaim.  At one point in his letter to the Christians at Rome, Paul encourages his hearers to “live in harmony.”  The traditional theme for the Sunday is Peace.  Those of us who are parents often associate peace and quiet.  But what is the biblical understanding of peace?  We will look at the two passages, which seem to be very noisy passages, and see if there is peace there.  The time for all ages will again be centred on a Manger, as we continue the  series called “Gifts of the Manger.”  This week’s gift is the gift of Comfort and Peace.  Remember that we are thinking of things that we might need to welcome a new baby.  If you wish to bring gifts for a new baby, feel free to bring them.  We will ensure that the gifts go to those in need.

The Scripture readings are Romans 15: 4-13 and Matthew 3: 1-12.

The Sermon title is “Live in Harmony”

Stewardship Campaign The End is Near
This Sunday is the last Sunday of our Stewardship Campaign.  After the Service there will be cake downstairs.  Check out the thermometers on the wall by the coffee maker upstairs.  We are very close to our budgeted goal for 2014.  Maybe this Sunday we will reach the top (or even go over!)  Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to consider your givings and handed in your pledge form. If you have not handed in a pledge form, we will not stop you from doing so at any time.  Without you support we cannot be the Church.

White Gift Sundays – Put a Gift Under the Tree
This year you have two opportunities to put gifts under our Christmas Tree, Sunday, Dec 8 and Sunday, Dec 15.
