June 1, 2014 - Easter 7

Greetings,

Sunday Worship
This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Easter Season.  The Scriptures focus on Jesus prayer for unity and protection for his disciples, and on his physical departure from among them. A passage in John’s Gospel just after Sunday’s reading gives us the Latin motto on the United Church crest.  What is unity when everyone seems to have different ideas about almost everything.  One of the scandals of the Church is how divided we are, why can’t we agree and get along.  My question is, “Why are there so many brands of coffee, it’s just a roasted bean?”

The Readings are Acts 1: 6-14 and John 17: 1-11.  The Sermon title is “Ut Omnes Unum Sint”

 Messy Church
Mark your calendars!   Messy Church is on Saturday, May 31 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.  Remember, Messy Church includes stories, games, crafts (some messy) and dinner for the whole family.  Our theme this time is Creation – God’s Wondrous World!  Share this with your friends and neighbours as well!

May 25, 2014 - Easter 6 with Special Congregational Meeting

Greetings,

I am putting  the information for the eMessage in the order in which the events are happening.  So I start with the Special Congregation Meeting which will be held after the Service on Sunday, May 25.

Sunday Worship
This Sunday is interesting for me because of an association I have with one of the readings, Acts 17: 22-31, about the Altar to an Unknown God.  There is a marvelous painting called He was Despised and Rejected of Men by Sigismund Goetzethat hangs in the Chapel of Victoria College in Toronto (where I  did my undergrad).  The painting, set in Edwardian England, illustrates Christ bound to the Altar to an Unknown God surrounded by a great crowd of people who, with one exception, seem completely unaware of Christ in their midst. I requested and received a  digital copy of this painting from the college to use on Sunday.   I am going to look at what Paul says about this Altar.  I think I will also ask the question, “Why is God unknown?”  I might also venture into the area of “I’m spiritual but not religious.”  I found a great quote about this: “Being privately spiritual but not religious just doesn't interest me. There is nothing challenging about having deep thoughts all by oneself. What is interesting is doing this work in community, where other people might call you on stuff, or heaven forbid, disagree with you. Where life with God gets rich and provocative is when you dig deeply into a tradition that you did not invent all for yourself.”

The Readings are Acts 17: 22-31 and John 14: 15-21.  The Sermon title is “The Unknown God.”

 Special Congregational Meeting
The Mortgage on our Church Building is up for renewal on June 1, 2014.  The group within our church that is responsible for issues like the mortgage is the Board of Trustees.  We tend not to hear much about this group, since their focus is on the church’s real property and major capital expenditure.  So, often the Board of Trustees is forgotten, until they are needed.  It has been discovered that we are in a situation where the membership of our Board of Trustees is out of date.  We need to update this Board.  However, because it represents the congregation, the membership of the Board of Trustees can only be decided at a Congregational Meeting, it’s not something the Church Board can decide.  Therefore, the Board of Spirit West United Church is calling for a Special Congregational Meeting of the Church to be held on Sunday, May 25 in the Church Sanctuary immediately following the morning service for the purpose of determining the Membership of the Board of Trustees.

May 18, 2014 - Easter 5

Greetings,
I am putting  the information for the eMessage in the order in which the events are happening.  So I start with the PLANT SALE!  But please note the announcement of the Special Congregation Meeting which will be held after the Service on Sunday, May 25.

http://www.tvap.co.uk/userfiles/images/EVENTS/Plant%20Sale%20with%20flowers%20copy.gifSpirit West Annual Plant Sale
It’s time for the Spirit West Plant Sale.  It will be happening at the Church starting tomorrow (Friday), May 16 from noon to 7:30 pm and on Sat, May 17 from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm.  Bedding plants will also be for sale on Sunday morning following worship, with the exception of hanging baskets, tumblers and tomatoes (unsold baskets, etc. will be picked up by High Q Greenhouse on Saturday night).  Volunteers are still needed in some areas — please contact Bonnie C. - 780-444-2230.   Share this news with your friends and neighbours

Men’s Breakfast
There will be a Men’s Breakfast this Saturday in the Lower Hall at 8:00 am.  Each man usually puts $10 in the pot to cover the cost of the food and add to the Men’s Breakfast Maintenance Fund which is used to pay for minor repairs around the church.  All men associated with Spirit West (and their friends) are welcome.

Sunday Worship
This Sunday is a bit of a challenge.  The lectionary readings are difficult.  The gospel reading from John, while containing assurances of Christ’s continued presence also has given rise to what might be called Christian imperialism.  “We have the truth and all the truth and you had better agree with us!”   I will look at this, especially in light of the reading from Acts.  The disciple Stephen annoys the religious leaders by proclaiming Christ.  He is stoned to death.
The readings are Acts 7:54-8:1 and John 14:1-14.  I have taken the title for my sermon from an experience I had during one of my pre-ordination interviews, “A hard question.”

Therefore, the Board of Spirit West United Church is calling for a Special Congregational Meeting of the Church for the purpose of determining the Membership of the Board of Trustee, to be held on Sunday, May 25 in the Church Sanctuary immediately following the morning service.

May 11, 2014 - Easter 4 - Christian Family Sunday (Mother's Day) with baptism

Greetings,

Lou Punko
For those of you who have not yet heard, Lou Punko passed away early this morning.  John was with her.  For those of you who do not know Lou, Lou is the artist who created the quilted hangings at the front of the church.  Lou and John are also long time members of this congregation, but have been away from the congregation because of Lou’s illness.  A service for Lou will be held at the Church next week.  The date and time of the service will be announced as soon as they are know.

Worship
This Sunday is Christian Family Sunday in the United Church Calendar and Mothers’ Day in everyone else’s.  We will be recognizing the nurturing of mothers and other women during the service.  We will be welcoming a young life into our community through Baptism.  The lectionary readings focus on Jesus the Good Shepherd.  This gives us an image of the Divine as caring, protective nurturer.  We will sing a version of Psalm 23 together, and will hear a reading of John 10: 1-10.

I am simply calling my sermon, “the Good Shepherd
